New books published by the Gerard Aflague Collection offers tools to teach the Palauan language to customers online. The Republic of Palau (Belau) is a beautiful island nation with a majestic marine backdrop. South of Guam by several hours via jet, the only other thing that truly marvels its tropical beauty are the people itself.

Palauan is a language spoken by the people of Palau. Gerard understands the importance of offering Pacific islanders and those that are interested in the language, educational resources to spread its culture. While Gerard has illustrated many Chamorro books for his Guam and Norther Marianas neighbors, he has the goal of publishing many books for the other smaller islands that do not necessarily have the skills or resources to do so themselves.

Gerard’s deeper desire is to give back some of his time through illustrating bilingual books, in order to further the cultures of the people in Micronesia and Polynesia. Most especially, he wants to offer resources to the thousands of islanders that have called the United States mainland their home.

Two books that Gerard has translated into Palauan include “Teach Me to Pray in Palauan” and “My First Palauan 200 Picture Word Book”. These children’s books offer parents or adults some reading resources to share with their children in order to further the language through repetition and vocalizing words with accompanying images. The first is a Christian prayer book that offers five simple prayers in both Palauan and English, and the second is a 200 picture word book that offers the tools to learn Palauan by seeing and saying a variety of images in Palauan.
